Camera footage is strong evidence of your line's interior condition, but it has limits. Knowing what to ask about helps you make a better repair decision.
What the Footage Shows
A sewer camera travels through the line and records the interior surface. It reveals cracks, joint separations, root intrusion, buildup, offsets where pipe sections have shifted, and standing water that suggests a belly or sag in the line.
The operator typically marks the distance from the access point so each observation has a location. That location matters: a single break near the house is a different repair than widespread deterioration along the whole line.
What to Ask For
- A recording or still images of the footage, not just a verbal summary
- The distance and location of each observation along the line
- A written description of each problem and its severity
- Whether the line holds its slope or shows bellies with standing water
What a Camera Can't Tell You
A camera shows the inside of the pipe, not the outside. It can't measure how thin the pipe wall has become, detect soil voids around the line, or confirm a leak that doesn't appear on the interior surface. It also can't always identify the exact material of an older pipe without additional context.
That's why camera evidence is one part of a diagnosis, not the whole picture. Combined with symptoms, site access, and the line's history, it guides the recommendation — but it doesn't replace a hands-on assessment of the repair options.
