Slow delivery isn't the same as a failing heater. The travel time from the unit to the faucet — and whether recirculation is in place — usually explains the wait.
Why Distance Matters
Hot water has to travel from the heater to the faucet. The farther the run, the longer it generally takes for hot water to arrive — and the more cold water sits in the pipe cooling between uses. But the wait isn't determined by distance alone: it also depends on the volume of water in the pipe, the flow rate, how recently the line was used, and whether any recirculation is configured. A distant faucet tends to wait longer than a nearby one, but a recirculation setup or frequent use can change that.
Recirculation and Usage
| Factor | Effect on Delivery Speed |
|---|---|
| Distance | Longer runs mean longer waits |
| Recirculation | Keeps hot water near fixtures; a failed pump slows delivery |
| Usage pattern | Long gaps between use let water cool in the pipe |
| Pipe sizing | Undersized or long runs slow delivery |
Not Automatically a Heater Failure
If the unit is producing hot water and only the delivery is slow, the heater is usually doing its job. The issue is the path the water takes. We assess the layout and recirculation before recommending work on the unit itself.
What to Share
- Which faucets are slow (distant ones, or all of them)
- Whether the water eventually gets hot (delivery vs. temperature)
- Whether you have a recirculation system or pump
- Whether the slowness is new or has always been the case
