Why It's Worth Asking For
Unlike a roof or a foundation, a sewer line can't be seen during a walk-through. A camera inspection is one of the few ways to understand its condition before you buy. On older homes, where clay or cast-iron lines may be near the end of their service life, it's especially relevant.
Knowing the condition lets you factor a potential repair or replacement into your decision, rather than discovering it after closing.
Due-Diligence Questions
- Is there a cleanout, and where is it located?
- What material is the line, and roughly how old is it?
- Does the footage show any cracks, offsets, or root intrusion?
- Are there bellies or standing water that suggest a slope issue?
- Can I receive a recording or report for my records?
What the Report Can and Can't Tell You
A camera inspection documents the interior condition at the time of the inspection: cracks, root intrusion, offsets, and standing water. It can't predict future failures or measure the pipe's remaining service life with certainty, and it can't see exterior wall thickness.
