What is the difference between pipe lining and pipe bursting?

Pipe lining (CIPP) inserts a resin-coated liner that cures inside the existing pipe, creating a new inner wall. Pipe bursting fractures the old pipe outward while pulling a new pipe into place. Lining rehabilitates the existing pipe; bursting replaces it.

Can a collapsed pipe be lined instead of replaced?

Usually not. Lining requires the existing pipe to maintain its shape so the liner can be inserted and inflated. A collapsed or badly offset pipe typically needs pipe bursting (if the path is intact enough) or open excavation for full replacement.

Does lining reduce the pipe's diameter?

Lining does slightly reduce the interior diameter because the liner adds thickness to the pipe wall. In most residential lines the reduction is small and doesn't affect flow, but it's a factor we assess when recommending the method.

How Each Method Works

Pipe lining (cured-in-place pipe, or CIPP) inserts a flexible liner saturated with resin into the existing pipe. Once in place, the resin cures to form a seamless new inner wall. The original pipe stays in the ground and acts as a host for the new liner.

Pipe bursting uses a splitting head that fractures the old pipe outward while simultaneously pulling a new pipe into the space behind it. The old pipe is destroyed and displaced; the new pipe takes its place.

Choosing Based on Condition

Lining suits lines with cracks, root intrusion at joints, or minor deterioration where the pipe still holds its shape. Bursting suits lines that are too damaged to line but where the underground path is still clear enough to pull a new pipe through.

When a line is collapsed, offset, or has lost its slope, neither trenchless method may apply and open excavation becomes the practical option. The camera inspection is what determines which path is realistic for your property.
